With warmer weather, Sweet Itch can cause unpleasant irritations which can drive our horses mad! Nature has provided animals with incredible systems to fight allergies and irritation but these systems need nourishing if they are going to work properly, this means feeding them with what they need to function properly.

EquiFeast's number one response to Sweet Itch is to hit back at it hard with FightBack, the ultimate immune system support supplement. By supporting the immune system, you are allowing it to do its incredible job. Fighting infections and repairing damage both require rapid production of new cells (white blood cells for immunity and 'normal' cells for repair). Modern diets are designed to provide the energy our horses need but are often quite deficient in the nutrients required for rapid cell production.

FightBack puts this right and helps the natural cell replication to proceed as rapidly as possible. It also contains the nutrients required to enable white blood cells to work efficiently (they burn lots of fats). As white blood cells are the 'Rapid Reaction Force' of the immune system this is crucially important.

The immune system works against a wide range of different germs - your vet has nothing to help your horse beat a virus - the immune system is really good at it if given the chance.

The quicker you get FightBack into your horse the better so consider buying some and keeping it in the cupboard for a rainy day.

Here's what elite event rider, Clare Wilson, had to say about FightBack:

"Petal is currently on fight back. She suffers from sweet itch which we have controlled with rugs to quite a good degree however she would still scratch and would often rub her ears raw. We tried a weeks trail pot and her ear's healed within that week we then stopped it as we thought it was coming to the end of the midge season but she soon started to scratch again, so continued to feed it till winter. Have just started her on it again and have been really impressed so far, even turned her out with no rugs which we never do and despite there being a lot of midges about she has not scratched! We tried her on a special course of drugs a few years ago to help her and they had no effect what so ever so fight back really is amazing!"

"Dear Sir - I have just read your piece about mud fever (news, 29 November) and wondered if you would consider an alternative view for publication. The vet view published is, in my opinion, both illogical and proven over years to be relatively ineffective.

Let us look at what vets recommend:

Stable the horse on clean bedding – No argument there
Carefully clip the affected area to allow it to dry – I strongly disagree. The hair on the legs has evolved over thousands of years to direct water away from the skin and keep it dry naturally. It also provides a scaffolding for mud to stick to and again keep that mud away from the skin.
Carefully dry the area – If you leave the hair and the mud the skin is naturally wicked dry (by the mud that is not in direct contact with the skin). In fact it probably won’t get wet in the first place. If possible I recommend the mud is left in place as a natural barrier and wicking medium.
Remove all scabs and debris – When I was a kid my mum always told me off for picking my scabs off. Scabs are nature’s band aid. In fact they are the immune system’s first line of defence. Why would you take that off and expose an unprotected wound to even more infection?
Consult your vet for treatment – In truth vets don’t have a very good track record with mud fever. The chances are they will prescribe anti-biotics and keep their fingers crossed.

So my advice would be:

If at all possible leave hair and mud in place. This will naturally keep the skin dry.
If you have to wash the legs spray a mild antiseptic (like Hibiscrub) and leave it to dry naturally. Wicking boots will be a good idea if stabled.
DO NOT PICK OFF THE SCABS.

Feed an immune supporting supplement. I'd recommend EquiFeast’s FightBack because I designed it but there are other products on the market too.

Does this work?

My horse Murphy had very bad mud fever in his first winter with me which did not improve with veterinary help. Since that year I have used my own methods (outlined above) and he has not had a single smidgen of mud fever in any of those six winters (or summers).

Just wanted to say a big thank you to you and the EquiFeast Team for all your help and support this year! Now that I'm fully back in action my horses are going great on their EquiFeast products and have really benefited from your bespoke service as well.

We also could not have survived the wet summer and autumn (and winter too, it looks like!) without our fabulous Regatta jackets and vests! They are super waterproof and warm, as well as looking smart, and we have used them throughout the year with great appreciation!
Many thanks to you all!
Cindy, Scott and CR Event Team"

I had a great show last Sunday - Ruxton Pinacolada scored 73% in the Medium music for 3rd place and 69% in the Advanced Medium music for 4th place. Fiano had a bit of fun in the PSG music and came second on 74%. I was really pleased to score 8 for the pirouettes! As usual, the Cool Calm and Collected worked its magic!"
